What to Pack for a Wildlife Expedition: Ocean Edition

Planning a wildlife expedition is exciting—but if you're heading into the ocean for the first time, packing can feel overwhelming. At Wild Pangea, we keep things simple, but we also know that the right gear can make or break your comfort in the water.

Here’s a tried-and-tested packing checklist tailored specifically for our ocean-based expeditions like Swimming with Humpback Whales in Moorea.

🎒 Ocean Essentials

Mask, Snorkel & Fins
Comfort is everything. If you bring your own, make sure you’ve tested them in water before the trip. If not, high-quality rentals are often available—but personal gear always fits better.

Wetsuit or Thermal Top (2–3mm)
Even in warm tropical water, long days at sea can get chilly. A light wetsuit or thermal rash guard helps you stay warm, buoyant, and protected from sun or jellyfish stings.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Avoid harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate—these damage coral reefs and marine life. Look for mineral-based sunscreens that are labeled reef safe.

Swimwear + Backup
Pack at least two swimsuits so one is always dry. If you’re using a wetsuit, rash guards or sports swimwear underneath help with quick changes and comfort.

Dry Bag (10–20L)
Keep your valuables, phone, towel, and camera safe and dry on the boat. A small dry bag is worth every cent.

📸 Photography Gear (Optional)

Action Camera or Compact Underwater Housing
You don’t need a $5000 setup. GoPros, Insta360, or even waterproof phones with cases can capture magic.

Spare Batteries & SD Cards
Saltwater adventures are tough on gear. Keep extras dry and ready—there’s nothing worse than running out of space or power mid-encounter.

Editing Software (Lightroom/Mobile App)
We often host casual editing sessions—so bring your laptop, tablet, or smartphone if you want to improve your ocean shots on the go.

🧳 Land & Travel Essentials

Windbreaker or Boat Jacket
It can get breezy during transfers or after water sessions. A windproof jacket keeps you warm and dry.

Warm Hat / Beanie
Surprising but true—your head loses heat quickly after long swims. A cozy hat is a small item with big comfort value.

Flip-Flops + Lightweight Sneakers
Waterproof sandals for boat days, sneakers for land hikes or island exploration.

Travel Towel
Quick-dry, compact towels are perfect for boat life.

Reusable Water Bottle
Hydration is key, especially under the sun. We encourage zero single-use plastic on all expeditions.

Final Thought: Less Is More

There’s no need to overpack. Bring what makes you comfortable, safe, and confident in the water—but leave room for connection, spontaneity, and awe. Some of the most powerful moments on our expeditions don’t require a camera—just your presence.
