What It’s Really Like to Swim with Humpback Whales in Moorea

Imagine floating in the crystal clear waters of a tropical lagoon, the sun warming your back and then, out of the deep blue, a 40-ton whale and her calf emerge in slow, graceful motion. Time stops. Breath catches. This is not a documentary. It’s real. It’s yours.

Welcome to Moorea, one of the most magical places on Earth to encounter humpback whales in their natural environment. Nestled near Tahiti in French Polynesia, this lush volcanic island becomes a sanctuary from July to October as humpbacks migrate here from Antarctica to give birth, nurse, and rest in its warm, protected waters.

Why Moorea?

Unlike many popular whale-watching destinations, Moorea offers something incredibly rare: the chance to swim with humpbacks. Strict local regulations ensure that only small groups (a maximum of six people at a time) are allowed in the water, keeping the experience ethical and respectful for both humans and whales.

At Wild Pangea, we work exclusively with licensed local captains and guides who specialize in reading the whales' behavior. That means no chasing, no crowding just quiet, meaningful interactions led entirely on the animals' terms.

Who Can Join?

You don’t need to be a scuba diver or freediving expert. If you're a confident swimmer and comfortable with a snorkel and fins, you're ready. We welcome:

  • Ocean loving adventurers

  • Conservation conscious travelers

  • Underwater photographers and beginners alike

What to Expect on the Expedition

Each day brings a new adventure. Some mornings, we spend hours with whales who choose to engage watching them breach, tail-slap, or hover just beneath us. Other days, it’s quiet, and the sea becomes a place of meditative stillness. In between, you’ll explore Moorea’s pristine beaches, hike to lush viewpoints, and swim with stingrays and blacktip reef sharks in the lagoon.

We also offer photography and editing sessions in the evenings, helping you transform your raw images into powerful visual stories regardless of your skill level.

Why It Stays With You

Swimming with humpback whales isn’t just an adventure it’s a perspective shift. Seeing these intelligent, gentle giants up close reminds you of our deep connection with the ocean and its creatures. For many of our guests, it’s a life changing experience.
